On June 8–11, 2021, the International Online Conference WOMEN’S DIMENSIONS OF THE PAST: IDEAS, EXPERIENCES, REPRESENTATIONS took place, marking the 10th anniversary of UARWH.
The conference was organized by the Ukrainian Association for Research in Women’s History and the Center for Urban History, with the support of the Heinrich Böll Foundation Ukraine.
What do we know about the real historical experience of real women amid the turbulence of various historical events? How do we envision women’s past during times of historical upheaval and in years of relative calm? How are women’s lived experiences represented in literature, art, and cinema? How have Ukrainian women changed under the influence of events they witnessed and participated in? Which sources can tell us most fully and reliably about women’s lives and activities? What can knowledge of women’s history offer for understanding contemporary processes in Ukraine?
The Organizing Committee received approximately one hundred submissions, from which, after an extensive selection process, 25 presentations were included in the Conference Program across 8 thematic panels. A total of 43 researchers directly participated in the conference as speakers, moderators, and discussants, including scholars of various ages and academic standing (from doctoral students to professors), 5 men, 9 UARWH members, and representatives of various disciplines (history, ethnology, folklore studies, sociology, literary studies, art studies, political science, media studies, cultural studies).
Geographically, we covered 8 Ukrainian cities (Lviv, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Uman, Poltava, Dnipro, Rivne) and 5 countries (Ukraine, Germany, Poland, the USA, and the United Kingdom). We also had the pleasure of hearing welcome remarks and reflections from our intellectual mentors — Prof. Martha Bohachevsky-Chomiak and Nataliia Pushkariova.
