Who We Are

The Ukrainian Association for Research in Women’s History (UARWH)

is an academic community of Ukrainian historians who dedicate a significant part of their scholarly work and educational activities to researching and/or teaching women’s and gender history.

The Association was founded on the initiative of a group of Ukrainian scholars (Oksana Kis, Kateryna Kobchenko, Olena Stiazhkina, Olha Labur, Maryna Voronina, and Oksana Malanchuk-Rybak), who gathered in Lviv on October 9, 2010, and established UARWH as an informal professional community of scholars united by a deep interest in studying the past of Ukrainian women and by a shared conviction that a gender approach must be applied consistently across historical studies.

In the absence of institutional frameworks for gender history in Ukraine, UARWH has become the only platform that — through the dedication of its members and collaboration with partner organizations — advances studies in women’s history, sets scholarly standards for research, brings together researchers, and promotes knowledge of women’s history beyond the academy.

Since 2010, UARWH has implemented a number of successful PROJECTS, including the preparation and publication of several BOOKS — unique collected and edited volumes on women’s history. UARWH members regularly publish the results of their research in scholarly publications and contribute to promoting knowledge about women’s historical experiences.

UARWH is a member of the International Federation for Research in Women’s History (IFRWH) and represents the interests and scholarly contributions of the Association’s members internationally.

The main areas of the Association’s activity include:

conducting scholarly research in the field of women’s and gender history;
teaching courses on women’s and gender history;
organizing scholarly and educational events (conferences, seminars, workshops, lectures, discussions, training sessions, etc.);
developing methodological and educational guidelines (textbooks, curricula, methodological guides, etc.);
offering expert evaluation of scholarly works, methodological resources, educational programs, textbooks, etc.;
consulting services to research institutions, civil society organizations, government bodies, media, individual scholars, and other interested parties;
building information resources (archives, libraries, etc.) on women’s and gender history;
providing informational and academic support to the Association’s members;
disseminating research outcomes in the form of books, chapters, articles, reviews, surveys, etc.;
promoting the scholarly contributions of the Association’s members in the field of women’s and gender history (through public lectures, presentations, exhibitions, media appearances, social media publications, etc.);
publicizing the Association’s activities on the official UARWH website, social networks, and in the media.
