Annotation: The first comprehensive intellectual biography of Nataliia Kobrynska in Ukrainian literary scholarship, this volume takes into account the various dimensions of her life-world — psychological, sociocultural, ideological, generational, and creative. Drawing on archival materials introduced into scholarly circulation for the first time (correspondence, memoirs, autobiographical writings), the author reconstructs the writer’s mental world, illuminates previously unknown milestones in her biography, and traces the foundations of her worldview. Kobrynska’s generational identity is examined through the prism of her relationships with leading representatives of successive literary generations (Ivan Franko, Mykhailo Pavlyk, Mykhailo Hrushevsky, Mykhailo Drahomanov, Olha Kobylianska, the Kulish couple, and others). For the first time, the writer’s entire body of prose, including little-known works, is analyzed stereometrically with regard to aesthetic and stylistic evolution, themes, poetics, genre, intertextuality, history of composition, and autobiographical genesis. Intended for literary scholars, historians, scholars of cultural studies, political scientists, psychologists, and philosophers, as well as all those interested in Kobrynska, her intellectual milieu, and the era of mid-nineteenth to early twentieth-century Ukraine.
