Annotation: The fourth volume of the scholarly ethnological series Folk Culture of Ukrainians: The Human Life Cycle is devoted to adult men as a gender-age group. It presents a broad spectrum of male activity in traditional Ukrainian culture, encompassing agriculture, the chumak trade, hunting, fishing, crafts, and kobzar traditions, as well as studies in customary law, professional male magic, and ritual practices. A substantial section is devoted to Cossack subculture. The volume also includes materials on the lives of homeless men and studies of stereotypical images of masculinity in Soviet and post-Soviet culture. The section “From the Ethnographic Classics” features works from rare editions edited by Ahatanhel Krymsky (an excerpt from the study “Zvenyhorodshchyna”) and by Volodymyr Bilyi and Andrii Loboda (“The Chumak Trade”). Intended for a wide range of researchers in sociocultural anthropology, ethnology, folkloristics, and cultural studies, as well as students and enthusiasts of Ukrainian antiquities.
